So what type of liner will you use for your pond? If you only knew what was available and the choices you have, it would scare you to death. No matter where you go to buy your liner, it always seems that the one that they have is without a doubt the best one on the market. The first liner that I (Greg Crane) bought for myself was vinyl. Two years after it was installed I drained the pond to patch two holes that I so gracefully placed in the liner with some sharp stones (murphy's law). I was very suprised to note that the texture of the vinyl fabric was somewhat hard, bordering on brittle below the water level after the liner dried enough to patch. After patching the liner I refilled the pond liner with water. Well guess what. the vinyl liner had shrunk a whopping 2 inches! For me this was not good, for my liner was precisely installed and affixed in place. The weight of the water pulled the liner from its fasteners and I am very lucky that the liner is still just above the water line on one side. My theory is (and I am very familiar with synthetic manufacturing processes) that the elasticizers used in the manufacture of the vinyl leeched out as a result of being in direct contact with the water constantly (which it is designed for, supposedly) and the result rendered the vinyl hard. Without a boubt, I could not remove and replace the same liner without destroying it. Regardless, I will never buy another vinyl liner to build a large pond in a permanent location. Being in the business all this puts me in a bind. Most of the profit in the pond liner business is in vinyl liners. Suprise! Why do you think that so many people recommend and sell it. Having said all this, I have chosen not to take advantage of the vinyl profit margin and only sell high quality EDPM and Butyl rubber liners by Resource Conservation Technology. RTC is a very dependable manufacturer, and our exclusive supplier for rubber liners. My number one goal is to see you the customer happy with the products that we supply you with NOTE: Never use a roofing grade EDPM, it in most cases it will kill your fish eventually because of the cheaper more toxic compounds used in its manufacture leeching into the water. RTC Pond Grade EPDM is a special EPDM rubber formulation optimized for pond-liner use. Unlike some EPDM rubbers commonly used for commercial roofing, It is completely safe for fish and aquatic plants. RCT warrants Pond-Grade EPDM liners for twenty years, subject to certain limitations. Extensive field experience suggests that they will last longer than twinty years in severe above ground environments and longer than thirty years in protected underwater or underground environments. Holes in EPDM can be permanently repaired by simply applying RTC repair tape. Stream and waterfall liners can be easily joined to pond liners with RTC seam tape. Although, it is advised not to field seam pond liners, unless the project is too large to be lined with a single continuous sheet. 45 MIL - EPDM STANDARD SIZES (Widths are available up to 50' and lengths up to 200')
RCT Liner Protection Fabric is a tough grey colored, non-woven synthetic polyester fabric with optimal characteristics typically used below garden pond liners to protect the rubber from puncture from rocks, roots, and other soil debris. LPF is approximately one-eighth inch thick, substantially thicker than fabrics commonly used for
